I stared down at the city lights the landfill quickly vanishing from view. With a surge of the spaceshipâs engine, we blasted up through the clouds and into the outer atmosphere.
Lucy sat snoring away in her doggie bed. Mr. X had put her in a perpetual dream state until we landed on Veratious.
Meanwhile, Celery clutched her necklace and squeezed the heck out of my right arm.. âI should be scared shitless. Why arenât we bouncing all over the walls of the viewing deck?â
âThis isnât the Starship Enterprise where people need to be seated to fly through space. The Katran use their own type of gravity, so we can move about the ship as if we are on Earth.â
âHow far away is Veratious?â
I gave her a smug smile. âOne hundred thousand light years from Earth. Like I said it will take four of our days to get there. Isnât the Katran technology cool?â
Celery stared out at the Milky Way galaxy that was all around us. âIs that what I think it is?â
âYes. Itâs the Milky Way but not for much longer. Soon we will be passing by the Canis Major galaxy. It has several red giants and as many as one billion stars.â
Celery closed her eyes. âMy head is reeling. You know Iâm a total Trekkie and this ship is so much more than the Enterprise. The entire ship is one big viewing deck. Is there a control room where a crew pilots the ship?â
âThe entire ship is run by robots and a sophisticated computer system.â
She stroked her spaceship necklace. âSorry, I just flashed on the old movie where the computer tries to kill the guy on the ship.â
I laughed. âThere is no Hal on board. Once you do your first trip through space the whole thing seems like a drive to Starbucks.â
She gave me one of her youâre-full-of-shit looks. âThis could never get old. I wish I could stay in space forever.â
âBe careful what you wish for.â
A robotic voice sounded from the walls. âAlert. A meteor cluster is headed toward us. Brace yourself.â
Before I could react, something hit the shipâs forcefield and Celery and I landed right on our asses. The ship tilted sideways and, despite the gravity field, we flew toward the far wall. I screamed out to Celery, âCover your face and brace for impact.â
The lights flickered twice and then we were plunged into darkness.
